Alright, there is a scene in “Passion of the Christ” the movie. Jesus is walking, often crawling while at the same time bearing a Roman Cross on his back, down what is commonly called the Via Dolorosa road. Blood is flowing from his back and forehead, literally pouring from his body. And Mary, his mother looks at Jesus, her son, as if asking him, “How long will you endure the agony and pain of bearing that cross?”
And Jesus, the Messiah, says to her, “Behold, I make all things new.” I was so moved inwardly as I watched that scene in particular. I think Mel Gibson comes fairly close to illustrating the both the physical bloodiness and the emotional passion of Christ’s crucifixion. Jesus made things new. His single act of sacrificing himself freely is what I call real strength. He could have delivered himself, but as he told Pilot the Roman governing official “No man take my life, but I give it freely”.
Man, I want to become a true example of Christ as I live out my life. I know it is difficult to reproduce humility without willful suffering, but is that not the point? We suffer the most agonizing pain when we suffer for well doing rather than for evil doing. When we are totally innocent, yet are the accused. But if we Christians, who truly want to follow Christ’s example, are not willing to endure such suffering, Christ said that we can’t be his disciples.
